Senior James Powell scored 21 points to lead the Gauchos to a 89-84 win at Loyola Marymount.
The senior also recorded 6 boards, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Orlando Johnson and James Nunnally both chipped in 16 points for the Gauchos. Gaucho big men Sam Phippen and Jaime Serna scored a combined 26 points and 9 rebounds. This was the highest scoring game so far for the Gauchos this year.
The Gauchos started quick offensively when Sam Phippen nailed a three, James Powell made a three, and then Phippen made a mid range jump shot. The Lions went on a 19-8 run to make the score 21-16. The Gauchos finished strong to take the lead at intermission, 35-31.
Then in the middle of the second half, James Nunnally got on fire. He made multiple shots and had an emphatic two handed slam dunk. Loyola Marymount play by play announcer said, "Folks get you fire extinguisher because James Nunnally is smoking!" Nunnally for Naismith baby.
The Gauchos finished strong and held off the Lions multiple times and won 89-84.
The Gauchos return home for a Tuesday game against Santa Clara and then Saturday vs. San Diego State. Come on out and support the Gauchos.
