Schedule Adds

UCSB has added games to the 2009-2010 slate for Mens Basketball. Sonoma State will come on November 7th for an exhibition and UCSB will open up the Golden Bear Classic vs Furman and if they win or lose will either play Cal Berkeley or Utah Valley.

The Odd Ole

Last March, UCSB athletics unveiled its newest creation, Ole. Ole is a giant Argentinian cowboy or other known as a gaucho. He made his soccer game debut the other night and I looked at my self and said, "what is that?" Ole just walked around, giving high fives, and hugging people. He didn't do any cheering and didn't hang out with the locos that much. I am a kid who has no relation with UCSB except being a fan and I cheer more than there mascot. My three year old brother cheers more than the mascot. He is an interesting looking dude but I would rather just have that middle aged white guy, the Fantom of the Dome, be the mascot. Maybe get a dance team member to be the mascot. Oh Yeah! All I am saying is now that there is this big, giant headed, mute mascot that the Gauchos have, we have lost respectability and now should join the club of bad looking mascots.

Westmont vs. #10 UCSB Gauchos Mens Soccer

In front of a strong 2,341 fans, The Gauchos kicked off their season the right way by defeating their cross town rivals 3-1 at Harder Stadium.

Westmont, the clear underdog, struck first on a goal by Ben Gordon in the 59th minute which silenced the Gaucho faithful and gave the Westmont fans something to cheer about.

It took 14 minutes for the Gauchos to strike back but when they did they scored a bonanza of goals. In the 74th and 79th, Freshman striker Michael Nonni deposited two goals in the back of the net. Then in the 85th minute, Martin Hedevag was able to explode past the Westmont defense and give the Gauchos an extra insurance goal.

UCSB out shot the Warriors 21-7 and 9-4 on shots on goal. David Walker and Michael Tetteh led the Gauchos with 4 goals a piece.

The Gauchos next game is on September 1st when CS Bakersfield comes to Harder Stadium to take on the #10 Gauchos!

Go Gauchos!

New UCSB Logo

Out with the old, and in with the new. The UCSB Athletic Department has published and created five new logos for the Gauchos. The new logos have a primary new color, Pacific blue, and still the good old Gaucho gold. On uniforms you will see a normal UCSB or a Santa Barbara or Gauchos reading. Mark Massari, the UCSB Athletic Director, said it was time to separate ourselves from the pack. "Being a UC and having the same colors as the other nine schools is really unique and cool, but we needed to separate ourselves," Director of Athletics Mark Massari said. "We accomplished that with Pacific blue and Gaucho gold. Grabbing consistency in branding and design was very important. We now have standards in fonts, logos and color schemes, plus we are playing to our strengths in use of UCSB and Santa Barbara names and Gaucho mascot and his 'Hat.' I'm excited and I hope Gauchos fans are as well." The new Nike gear will sport the new logos starting this week with a women's soccer game tonight and a men's game vs. Westmont on Saturday. Fans will also be able to purchase new shirts, sweatshirts, novelty items at the games this week and starting on September 1st will be able to buy from a wide selection of Gaucho Gear!
Here are some pictures of the new logos!

Chris Devine signs with Belgium Team

Chris Devine! Belgium League! A few days ago UCSB legend and '09 graduate Chris Devine signed with Belgium League 1 team VOO Verviers-Pepinster. Chris Devine will be on a team that he will be a starting on and will try to lead back to the Belgium postseason. Chris talked to some NBA teams such as the Spurs and Lakers but was not drafted. Chris will be a solid European player from years to come. Go Gauchos!
